I purchased these fans as I'm 6'2", ceilings are 8' and they seemed to be the fans with the blades closest to the ceiling so I don't lose a hand while I'm getting dressed in the morning. We purchased 4 of these fans, as well as another model from Minka Aire. Compared to the other model of Minka Aire (purchased from Restoration Hardware), these are much easier to install. They have not wobbled, move air nicely. They light is perhaps not the most attractive, but it lights the room well. The base of these fans are larger than other fans, and may appear bulkier towards the ceiling. However, it is a bit more complex than a screwdriver and electrical tape to install, as another reviewer mentioned. The ceiling fan has to be secured to the ceiling in an appropriate fashion, either attached directly to a ceiling joist, or through brace b/n the ceiling joists. (westinghouse Saf-T Brace). The person installing it has to have a knowledge of how to attach wires. After I installed all 5 fans, I noticed that each remote control operated every fan in the house. There was instructions in the manual to avoid remote control interference, but this did not work. I did call the support, who were helpful, but did mention that the instructions in the fans to avoid interference was not clearly written in the manual. How to fix the problem is as follows:1. turn off the power on the electrical box2. disconnect the black and white electrical connections on all fans except one3. turn on the power4. remove the back piece from the remote control (easily removed) and find ZONE and NUMBER5. change one combination6. hold the "stop" button on the remote control for 10 seconds, or until the ceiling fan light will blink twice7. Now disconnect this ceiling fan's electrical connections, move to the next ceiling fan and repeat the processFor an outdoor installation, this fan is perfect. Especially in areas with high winds as this fan has no down-rod to allow the fan to swing in the breeze. This is "wet" UL rated, versus "damp" UL rated, which is a better electrical rating for fans installed in areas such as porches that are not fully enclosed. Of course, the fan would be great for indoors, too. The blades look to be resilient and should stand the test of time and weather. The installation was by far the easiest of any fan that I have installed. The only part I didn't like on the installation was that the safety cable would come off the safety hook when lifting the fan into the mounting plate. I taped the cable in place with a little electrician's tape, which solved the problem just in case the fan slipped during installation, as it would still be caught by the safety cable. The 3 blades are weighed to ensure that they match for balancing, and they just slip firmly into slots into the fan (versus 3 to 5 screws holding them). A blade balancing kit is provided, but I didn't need to use. The light can be installed or an optional cover is provided in case the light is not needed. This fan does not require a different wire for the fan versus the light, so it is a "single switch" installation. The provided remote control works very nice to individually control the light (with variable bright/dimness) and the fan with variable speed. The fan direction is also reversible with the remote (and only with the remote), so no climbing to change the rotation direction from summer to winter. The fan has a simple elegance once installed.Had a hard time finding a low-profile (ceiling hugger) fan we liked. There's not a lot to choose from out there, especially if you don't want the light. This fan gives you the option to go with or without the light, which is a great feature. Fan looks great and is very stable and quiet.07/20/11 update: Recently bought two more of these fans for upstairs bedrooms. One of the new fans runs silently, just like the the first one we bought for the family room downstairs. The other new fan makes a very noticeable humming sound that gets louder as the fan speed is increased. I called Minka-Aire customer support and they told me to return the fan and get a new one. I apparently just got a bad unit. A fan in this price range should be silent (other than the sound of moving air), so if you get one that makes any noise at all it should be returned. This is where Amazon's fantastic return policy pays off.10/09/12 update: Should have followed up on this a long time ago. The fan noise ended up being a mounting problem - nothing to do with the fan. Have had three running for well over a year now and they've all been great. This is the 4th fan of this model that I bought in the past 3 years for my daughter’s home and mine. The first 3 had the halogen light that works fine for the bedroom but is a little dim for the family room. This most recent one had the LED light which is quite bright. I installed the LED model over my kitchen table. I like the ease of installation with this fan vs. others I have purchased in the past. It is quiet and powerful and I love the remote controls. For our kitchen, I found the LED light too bright and resolved this problem by installing an opaque plastic film over the light source and now the light intensity is perfect. All in all, I highly recommend this fan.I gave this fan and light a 5 star rating because it is a beautiful fan and for the money a great value. I originally purchased this fan for a basement remodel but decided it wasn't a good fit because it looked bulky hanging from my '8 ceiling. This was more of an error on my part than anything wrong with the fan. I ended up moving the fan to a bedroom where it would be a better match aesthetically. I am very pleased with this fan, it runs beautifully with the remote and moves a decent amount of air. I like the dimmer feature on the light too.I would definitely recommend this fan. It is a sleek modern design. It is also very easy to assemble and install. I am a DIY woman and I and a friend were able to assemble and install this fan in an hour.Oh and I should add I have had this fan up and running for over a month and have also moved it from one room to another. It is still super quiet and is running fantastic.
